Garden Security Part 2: Gates

Wooden Gates from Harrow Fencing Supplies

Following on from last month where we discussed the security of your garden in relation to your fences, we’re now going to talk about wooden gates. There is an obvious difference here as the gates are actually meant to be a point of access, however, they are meant to be used only by you and the people you give permission to access your property.

For the most part, your considerations in choosing a garden gate will come down to where it is placed and how it looks next to your fencing. Because most people opt for wooden fencing, it is often better to go with wooden gates; this helps to keep a consistent look to your home and improves the aesthetics if you’re thinking about selling in the near future.

Gate Height

Now it’s time to discuss the pressing security issues. If you’ve got your fence sorted you can’t neglect your gate. Since you’re garden fencing around the back and side of your property will be around the 1.8m mark, you should also get a gate to match this, keeping your perimeter protected from prying eyes and potential thieves. If the gate is at the front of your property then you will need to keep the height down so as to avoid obstructing the view of your property and to prevent thieves hiding behind it. Be careful though, there might be planning restrictions for the height of your gate on the front of your property if it’s adjacent to a highway or if you’re in a conservation area.

Locking Your Gate

To improve the robust security of your gate and control access to your garden, you should ensure you have secure bolt locking. It’s often advisable to have a lock at the top and the bottom of your gate, making it more difficult for the gate to be buckled and broken. Padlocking the bolts for your garden gate also adds extra peace of mind, especially if you’re away for large chunks of time.

Types Of Gate

There are several types of wooden gate that we supply here at Harrow Fencing. This is so that you can always find a solution which matches your existing fencing or any new fencing you purchase with us. We have butted close board gates, mortice close board gates – available in heights from 1.2m to 1.8m – and larch lap gates at a height of 1.8m.

Extra Security Tips

Many households now have an external security spot light which comes on when it detects motion. If you have this at your property you might want to direct it towards your gate.
