Some fences will stand up to the wind better than others, and if your property is located in an area that is regularly battered by high winds, then it’s smart to construct your fence to offer as much protection as possible from the gusts.

This month, we’re taking a look at the best types of fences for windy areas so you can make the wisest choice when it comes to choosing the perfect fence for your property.

Choose the right posts

The type of fence posts you choose will have a direct impact on the strength and sturdiness of the rest of your fence. Timber posts are more likely to be dislodged or misaligned when faced with strong winds so it’s definitely wise to take that into account before you buy. If you already have a fence with timber posts that is suffering badly from the wind, think about replacing them with concrete posts. Properly installed concrete posts will make a noticeable difference to your fence: the panels, securely attached to the posts, will be able to stand up to stronger winds and won’t collapse at the slightest breeze. For new fences in windy areas, concrete posts are definitely the best way to go.

If you’re desperate for wooden posts, make sure they are set right, either in gravel or concrete. Not only does this provide a strong foundation for the posts themselves, but will also provide extra protection from rot and water infiltration to the underground portion of the posts.

We supply long lasting, durable concrete fence posts and bases here at Harrow Fencing, so don’t hesitate to contact us!

Trellis

When the wind starts to blow, one of the best defences is a fence which allows wind to pass through. This takes much of the stress caused by high winds off the fence, so you don’t have to put up with repairing or replacing fencing that keeps getting blown to the ground every time the wind picks up.

Trellis fencing is perfect for dissipating the stress produced by high winds, and installing concrete posts with trellis fencing will provide comprehensive protection from the wind. You can also use trellis as a topper instead of full panels. This will still act to take some stress off the rest of the fence when high winds are inbound, but you will still want to install concrete posts to make sure the panels are properly braced.

Wire mesh fencing

For total protection in particularly windy areas, where wooden fencing just hasn’t proved enough, wire mesh fencing is the ultimate choice. While the main advantage of wire mesh fencing comes from its security benefits, it will stand up to the wind easily, letting it speed through its stable mesh design.

The rigid, stable construction of wire mesh fencing makes it one of the strongest domestic fences available, and can be constructed in a number of styles and designs to suit your needs, so aesthetic appeal isn’t compromised.

If you live in an area greatly exposed to constant high winds, we definitely recommend trying out wire mesh fencing. Wind will have much less of an impact and the fence won’t start to lean or bend during gusts, so while you’re taking shelter indoors from a nasty storm, your wire mesh fence will be standing stalwart taking whatever is thrown at it.
